If you've studied at Oxford, or you've made the city part of your permanent address, then getting married here is truly special. The beautiful architecture and rich history makes for a stunning backdrop. But, being the small city that it is, finding the perfect wedding reception venue - without venturing down the hotel route - can feel somewhat like copying everyone else. So here is a shortlist of venues that are not so commonly found on the FYP.
Oxford College Wedding
Getting married at your Oxford University college is something beautifully unique and meaningful, and something that should definitely not be taken for granted. But, with the colleges' busy summer schedules, it can be almost more luck than design that allows you to have both your ceremony and reception there. However, most colleges are open to the ceremony taking place in the chapel, so please read on for wedding reception venues to consider after your college ceremony.
Non-Alumni Oxford College Wedding
On the other hand, if you have not studied at Oxford, but would still like to explore the possibility of getting married in one of the colleges, then read on, as two of the colleges do actually allow couples who are not alumni to get married inside their college walls.
The OGs of Oxford Wedding Venues
Before I dive in and talk about wedding venues in Oxford that you might not have stumbled across before, let's talk about the OGs of the Oxford wedding scene. These are, in no particular order:
The Bodleian Libraries. A stunning venue, and they KNOW weddings. They are teamed up with Oxford's premier wedding caterer, Oxford Fine Dining, and together they really know how to make beautiful weddings happen. Two things to look out for: the tight arrival and set-up times, and the stonking price to include the Sheldonian.
Oxford University Museum of National History and Pitt Rivers Museum. Really fun, alternative venues - an easy walk from most colleges - and once again working with the fabulous Oxford Fine Dining team
Ashmolean Museum. From the ancient to the modern, this impressive building and its unique collections make for a truly speactacular setting. And, you've guessed it, also in combination with Oxford Fine Dining
Oxford Town Hall. They've been doing weddings forever. I don't think I need to add more. But surprisingly, they're paired up with Elegant Cuisine, instead of Oxford Fine Dining!
Cherwell Boathouse. Renowned for their delicious food, the permanent marquee is available for weddings and events.
The Perch. Pretty pub with a marquee during the summer months. Another very popular Oxford wedding reception venue!
Isis Farmhouse. Popular pub and event space, surrounded by water.
So what other wedding venues are worth exploring in Oxford?
Oxford College Wedding Package
As I hinted to before, there are actually two Oxford colleges that can consider opening their doors to non-alumni and alumni alike.
These are Harris Manchester College and the Radcliffe Observatory, which is overseen by Green Templeton College.
But booking far in advance is recommended - their available dates get snatched up very quickly! If the dates are gone, let me recommend other Oxford wedding venues to consider next.
Weddings within Oxford
Following the colleges, there are two other venues within walking distance of Oxford city centre, if you want that Bodleian or Ashmolean feel, and a third if you want that summer marquee feel like The Perch or Cherwell Boathouse.
The first one is Rhodes House. It's got history and beautiful architecture, renovated spaces, and a dedicated events team (and on-site accommodation).
The second one is The Oxford Union. While mostly used for student balls, rather than weddings - when it's not being used as the venue for prominent speakers and compelling debates - the debating chambers and rooms are steeped in the history of Oxford. And no stranger to a good party.
The third one is Oxford Botanic Gardens. While slightly unusual, as it will stay open to the public until 5.30pm, the Gardens allow you to have a marquee wedding on one of its lawns, making for a haven within the city.
While the convenience of an Oxford city wedding venue can't be denied, there are two further wedding venues that I would suggest looking at, a short car or taxi ride away.
Weddings (just) outside Oxford
As promised, these are very close to the city, for the convenience of both transport and accommodation.
Indeed, the first one if no more than 10 minutes away by car. In the very picturesque Boars Hill lies Foxcombe Hall, home to Peking University MBA exchange students during term time, a wedding venue during the summer months.
And finally, the privately owned, period country house of Kirtlington Park is a house available for weddings, without the need for a marquee, which is highly unusual in Oxfordshire. Worth exploring, wouldn't you say?
